Y1 Curriculum

Maths in Year 1

What do children learn in Year 1?

In Year 1, children cover a wide range of topics such as addition and subtraction, measuring, and recognising shape. There is a major focus on fluency and place value - children will eventually learn to understand, read, write, order and compare numbers up to 100.

This half term, Year 1 are learning: about addition and subtraction within twenty, as well as measures of length, height, mass and capacity.

How can I help my child with maths in Year 1?

  • Encourage children to practice their maths at home - for example you could roll a dice and children have to say one more or one less than the number rolled
  • Link maths in to everyday situations - for example could children compare how many carrots are on their plate and how many are on your plate?
  • Use online games and apps to engage children in their maths. White Rose's One-Minute maths app (found on both apple and android app stores) is ideal for Year 1!
  • Follow the KS1 twitter account. We'll post regularly to show you what we've been learning at school, so you'll be able to talk to your child about it at home.
  • The secret is practising little and often, rather than all at once. You could have a maths calculation/fact of the day or week that you focus on.
