    Maths in Year 4

What do children learn in Year 4?

In Year 4, children cover a wide range of topics such as calculations, perimeter and area, and decimals. There is a major focus on multiplication - children will learn their times tables up to 12x12, and use them to multiply three-digit numbers using written methods.

This half term, Year 4 are learning: about shape, money and time

How can I help my child with maths in Year 4?

    • Encourage children to practice their maths at home - for example you could roll two or three dice and ask children to multiply the numbers together
    • Link maths in to everyday situations - for example could children help add and subtract during a shopping trip?
    • Use online games and apps to engage children in their maths. Times Table Rockstars is ideal practice for Year 4! Children also have a login for Power Maths games linked to their learning at school.
    • Songs and chants can help children remember key facts. YouTube and BBC Supermovers are excellent resources for this.
    • Follow the LKS2 twitter account. We'll post regularly to show you what we've been learning at school, so you'll be able to talk to your child about it at home.
    • The secret is practising little and often, rather than all at once. You could have a maths calculation/fact of the day or week that you focus on.
